The Famous Person Nobody Knew

by Aldelm Ferriols, Subkulture magazine, 2007.

Gerard Bumanglag a.k.a. Abortedlife is more than meets the eye. To most of the dark denizens around the globe, he is known for his web resource dating back to the late nineties known as “Goth in Asia.” This was a popular reference for the local underground scene in Manila, Philippines, finding its own niche as an essential landmark on the internet’s darkest corners providing real-time news and information on event schedules plus a list of musicians that represents the formerly untrodden oriental regions. It eventually proved to be a vital part of the Gothic history itself.

Even Mick Mercer, a world-renowned journalist from england and author of numerous informative books about the gothic subculture the world over, stated in his interview with Meltdown magazine that Gerard’s asian gothic website was his favorite online destination to visit at that particular point in time.

G.B. is also deeply involved with the Philippine gothic community that is driven by the pioneering dark lifestyle specialists "Subkulture Productions", the only legitimate gothic movement in the country. Subkulture, coupled with G.B.'s persistence to reach out to foreign artists, was able to bring over international bands to our native soil, such as Eve of Destiny, Angina Pectoris and Haruhiko Ash to name a few. He is now putting up a replacement site, titled "Life-Blood" or Life-blood.net, which is a fresher incarnation of his fallen "Aborted Life" e-zine where old and new reviews/interviews by him can be accessed.

Early in 2006, Gerard wanted to get back into the web wagon and thus he started his online profiling site for Goths called “My Gothic Heart” or Mygothicheart.com; there he was able to generate over 30 thousand members in no time, and is now among the top gothic communities in the world-wide web. In sheer humor, he describes it somehow as “a safe refuge for suicidal teens.” The said online realm at length reached cult status within its starting year alone, then before its first anniversary, it was for showcased on a local TV show via Studio 23’s "Digital Tour" program and also a foreign TV channel called G4TV “Attack of the Shows!” and other types of media publications. Those were the highlights of his career as a webmaster that inspired him to continue on with his craft.

I addition to that, a lot of unsigned outfits together with youtube directors who rode right along with the hype of things by composing a jingle or two as well as a video infomercial for "MGH", it's popular abbreviation.

It has been the primary hangout place of the everyday lives of the digital Goth and Emo individual which to this day still garners an average of more than 10 thousand clicks per day.

In 2007, he made two more websites, Vampiredomain.com for the vampiric audience and Gothicspot.com, which is the adult version of MGH and are both gradually
ascending to new heights.

Gerard since the the turn of the decade has been contacting and befriending noteworthy bands in the Gothic genre on a global scale. Among the few he nailed an interview with were
The Azoic, Dawn of Ashes, Dismantled, Celldweller, Tragic Black, Ikon, Angels and Agony, Noxious Emotion and many others.

In a recent interview, Gerard stresses that doing his morbid projects on the net is merely a way of giving back to
the Gothic culture which he loves unconditionally.

Gerard is a proud poet as well, voicing out a number of literary works and is one of his many favorite
pastimes. As I recall correctly, he mentioned that he was only able to rekindle his poetic flare back in august of
2007 from a long gap that goes way back to his formative years, touching on many a depressive topic which lasted for a couple of months in writing mode.

As if that's not remarkable enough, he also juggles the above-mentioned habitual tendencies with his medical course, currently finishing up his last years. Then it dawned upon him one somber night, "why not create something for
my field of study, medicine?" and so history was yet to follow right away in the form of “Medlyf.com” (pronounced as
Med Life) and is now showing great potential as it garners a growing number of devotees from prominent medical schools in the country and overseas.

True to the creator's credo,
“Survival of the Fittest” Gerard has truly survived time and time again, showing people how
well he can excel by just turning his visions into visuals.

So the term “The famous person nobody knew” rings quite true. Most of the people around the
planet immersing in his creations simply know him by his username, “Abortedlife” but through his prolific web creations that he has shared with the world, almost single-handedly, lies his true colors, that is a real artist and innovator.

This year, he’s
honing his skills and collaborating with other programmers to enhance the features of his themed pages, topped with his personal trademark in graphic designs, in which he is showing real progress.

So how can a Visionaire, A Poet and A Digital Artist not be known? Well…

Now you know.
